This Land Is Your Land

The melody to This Land Is Your Land has been running through my head lately -- catchy! I started to wonder, does "This land is your land, this land is my land", refer to property ownership (as in, you don't -- it belongs to all of us)? Sure enough, read some of the alternate lyrics that "composer" Woody Guthrie used from time to time.

This collectivist piece of crap was written in response to Irving Berlin's God Bless America (not one of my favorite songs either, mind you). The other thing about it that I did not know, was that this wasn't an original melody. Guthrie nicked it from somewhere else. It was an "existing" melody, as Wikipedia euphemistically puts it.

We sure could use some good classical liberal alternatives to the collectivist "folk music" claptrap that came out of the "progressive" era. Good music that has us singing all the way down the road to serfdom. We can do better.

    1. Then this isn't folk music, it's Woody Guthrie's music. The American culture isn't collectivist. It has always been individualist, self-determined. That's why I put "progressive" and "folk music" in "scare quotes". It's fraudulent.

A catchy tune is a great way to propagandize people. Even I was sucked in, and I should have known better. That was my whole point.

    1. I get that. You don't seem to get my point, which is that a catchy tune is also a great place to hide political propaganda, disguised as "people's wisdom". I hummed that infernal song for decades before I realized how badly I had been p0wned.

I'm just saying we can do better than the collectivist claptrap that came out of the "progressive" era. Songs that glorify life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, the satisfaction of self sufficiency and self determination. That's what I'm talking about.

    1. Yeah, like I said, I get that. I've already responded to your thesis. There's a big difference between authentic folk music and collectivist claptrap political propaganda masquerading as folk music.

People want to be free. They like the satisfaction of achievement and self sufficiency. They don't like being herded down the road to serfdom. I'm sure there's a good song in there somewhere.

    1. This land is your land would be folklore alright. Fictional Marxist drivel that no one should be allowed to own property.
