Important Principles to Reflect on For Independence Day

Read this first: What the Declaration of Independence Said and Meant, by Randy E. Barnett.

This should be required reading for all Republicans and by all school children. Mr. Barnett comments on the text of the Declaration of Independence, which we supposedly celebrate on Independence Day. Maybe. Here's the preamble, in case you forgot:

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, 

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

 

The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off

I'm afraid we're going to have to let this burn. It will set feminism back 50 years. Transgenderism is one of the few disabilities we're not allowed to treat rationally. I feel sad for the victims. Indulgence is not compassion.

 

It Isn't Big Government, It's a Runaway Train

 No one is accountable. No one is responsible.It's all fourth quadrant spending. It works like this:

1. Spend on myself. I care about cost and quality.
2. Spend someone else's money on someone else: I minimize cost. Quality doesn't matter.
3. Spend someone else's money on me: I don't care about cost, only quality.
4. Spend someone else's money on someone else: I don't care about cost or quality.

Stop It With the Fear Mongering!

This isn't the first heatwave we've had, and it won't be the last. The climate has always been changing. Give me a falsifiable hypothesis. The dire predictions we've had so far have been stunningly inaccurate. At some point, it's time to admit that the whole theory was bunk.

‘Jaw-dropping’ forecast is warning sign of climate change’s future impact in Washington, scientists say, says the Seattle Times. There's no excuse for this kind of political propaganda. 

Update: okay, it got up to 102.6 today, according to my weather station. I think that's hotter than I remember it ever getting around here. But that doesn't mean there's a causal link between that and human fossil fuel consumption.
